The History: In 1897, leading members of five of the churches in the village of Glens Falls met to discuss the possibility of creating a residence for the elderly. The great immediate difficulty they faced was in finding a suitable location. But two years later, in 1899, local resident Mary Arobell Conkling stepped forward to offer a home at the corner of Warren and McDonald Streets for a price dramatically lower than its fair market value. It was a gesture of enduring generosity which was quickly accepted, and The Glens Falls Home was born. Even though the Home quickly outgrew the Conkling house and a new facility needed to be built just a few years later, Mary Conkling's spirit of commitment to her community continued to drive its mission for over a century. As The Glens Falls Home prepares to enter a new phase in its long and storied history, the spirit of Mary Conkling endures and her legacy of caring and compassion continues to be the guiding light of all The Glens Falls Home does today.
